At all times and all levels in a professional career LEADERSHIP in all its facets is the key differentiator ! It is ever evolving across ones’competencies, behaviours, beliefs and perceptions.
When you lead “ Yourself ”, while knowledge, expertise and other skills are definitely needed, I believe that Trust, Authenticity and Credibility should be an unwavering platform on which you should stand. ‘Groundedness’ where one is stable, mature, self confident and true to ones’ values is an equally important attribute.
When you lead “ Teams “, be an empathetic and engaging leader – empathy across all levels both internal and external should be built as a value in the entire organisation. Coach others, help them grow and develop, provide direction and support as required and help them to become ‘peak performers’.
When you lead the “ Business “, let the ‘ Vision’ be clear, uniquely and ambitiously frame what it means to win. How will the business look like in 3-5 years? How will money be made in this business in the future? What capabilities are needed to win in the future? Collaborate and communicate with one and all to ensure that your strategic intent and its execution is absolutely clear. Build organisation strengths across key dimensions, support it to move to the next level, help people see the big picture and align the organisation in the direction you want to take it.
And finally, ensure that your engagement with the Board is effective. Promote a forward looking agenda (beyond fiduciary) and proactively foster relationships beyond the meeting. And, with the external stakeholders, commit to make a positive big-picture impact!
